AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Baseball team used a four-run inning to take the series finale against Sul Ross State 7-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Matthew Williams pitched into the fifth inning, giving up only one run on four hits to earn his second win of the season.
Michael Evan had three hits for the Tornados (8-7, 2-1 ASC), driving in one and scoring another, while
Jake Valadez added two hits to the team's nine total hits.
CTX would strike in the first inning, grabbing a 1-0 lead a leadoff walk by
Bret Leiferman, who would move to second on the sac bunt, and come home on Evan's single up the middle. The Tornados would add two runs in the fourth on a Lieferman two-run single to make it 3-0.
Williams allowed a leadoff walk in the first inning, before retiring the next nine Lobos (8-10, 1-2 ASC). SRSU threatened in the fourth with men on the corners with one out, but Williams was able to get the fly out to center and a strike out to end the inning.
In the fifth, CTX would bat around as they pushed across four runs. Valadez brought home the first run with a two-run single.
Race Mellman would follow up with an RBI single.
Luke Kress and
Casen Novak would both add RBI singles in the inning as the Tornados took a 7-0 lead.
Kylen Harrell would relieve Williams in the sixth inning and
Ryan Capel would give up a run in the ninth before retiring the side as the CTX won 7-2 and have won six of their last seven games.
The Tornados will travel to Georgetown, Texas on Tuesday to face Southwestern at 6 p.m. CTX defeated the Pirates 10-4 at Tornado Field back on Feb. 26.
