Mellman leads the way in Tornados win over Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Concordia Baseball team, behind Race Mellman's three hits, defeated Southwestern 6-4 on Tuesday night for their seventh win in their last eight games.

Mellman had three hits, including a home run, as he scored twice and had two RBIs. The Tornados, meanwhile, used six pitchers on the night, giving up only four runs on six hits.

Cole Angelle got the start, but only went two innings, as the Pirates took an early 2-0 lead after one inning. CTX responded with a run in the top of the second on Mellman's homer to left. The Tornados would tie it up at two-all in the fourth on Casen Novak's RBI single, after Mellman singled and stole second.

In the fifth, the Tornados would push across three runs. CTX would load the bases after Luke Kress was hit by a pitch. Two runs would score on Bret Lieferman's sac fly and a Pirates' error to lead 4-2. Mellman would bring home the final run of the inning on his single into left to make it 5-2.

Southwestern added two runs in the bottom half of the sixth to make it 5-4. The Tornados would get a run back in the eighth on Caleb Maddox's RBI single to extend their lead to 6-4. Colton Poindexter, Leiferman and Ryan Capel would combine to pitch the final three innings of the game.

In the ninth, the Pirates would threaten with a double steal to put the tying run at second with two outs. But Capel would force fly out to center to end the game and earned his second save of the year.

CTX will next travel to Longview, Texas for a three-game series with LeTourneau beginning on Friday, March 10, at 6 p.m.
