Tornados rally past UT Dallas for fourth win in a row

DALLAS – The Concordia Baseball scored in seven of the nine innings, on their way to a 8-5 win over 13th-ranked UT Dallas on Tuesday, the team's fourth-straight win.

The Tornados used five total pitchers for the middle of the week game, as Sean Mathews (1-0) pitched a scoreless fifth inning to earn the win. Trey Toney earned his second save of the year after pitching 2.2 innings, allowing only two hits and striking out two.

Bret Leiferman, meanwhile, tallied a team-high four hits, driving in a run and scoring three times on the day. Caleb Rodriguez drove in two runs for the Tornados, while Race Mellman had two hits, including a triple.

CTX scored a run in four of the first five innings and headed to the sixth trailing 5-4. Clarence Guidry reached on a one-out single and stole second. He would score two batters later on a Leiferman RBI single. Michael Evan followed up with an RBI double to right to give the Tornados the 6-5 lead.

After allowing five runs in the first three innings, the CTX pitching staff did not allow another run and only two hits total.

The Tornados would add a run in the seventh on Mellman's RBI triple and an insurance run in the ninth on a Comets' error to make it 8-5. Toney closed down the ninth with a pair of ground outs and a strike out to seal the win.

CTX will now prepare for a six-game homestand, facing East Texas Baptist in a three-game series starting on April 13 at 7 p.m.
