Tornados come up short against ETBU

BOX SCORE MARSHALL, Texas – A Cayla Gonzalez goal in the 84th minute was not enough as the Concordia Texas Women's Soccer team's rally came up short against East Texas Baptist on Thursday, losing 2-1.

Gonzalez's goal was the seventh of the season for her as the Tornados (4-2-0, 0-1-0 ASC) had six shots, four on them on goal for the night. Shelby Franco, meanwhile, tallied four saves as the Tigers (4-2-0, 1-0-0 ASC) finished with 16 shots in the game.

In the first half, CTX and ETBU remained in a stalemate throughout the half, but the Tigers broke through the defense in the 37th minute, taking a 1-0 lead. The Tornados tried to even the score before the half, but Maria Paula Vela's shot went wide of the goal and the team headed to the locker room trailing.

In the second half, ETBU would extend their lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute. CTX would begin a late rally though as Gonzalez was fouled inside the box and given a penalty kick opportunity. She would fire it past the right side of the goalie to cut the deficit in half. In the final minute, the Tornados would push the ball forward but were unable to get a shot off before the final buzzer, falling 2-1.

CTX will stay on the road traveling to Longview, Texas, to face LeTourneau in another American Southwest Conference matchup on Saturday at 2 p.m.
