CTX wins extra inning thriller over Redlands

TUCSON, Ariz. – Bret Leiferman got the win on the mound and also scored the game-winning run to lead the Concordia Texas baseball team to a 12 inning 6-4 win over Redlands Sunday at Kino Sports Complex.

Leiferman, a junior from Round Rock, Texas, went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI at the plate while also throwing 2.0 scoreless frames as CTX moved to 4-3 on the season.

The Tornados struck first in the top of the third when Leiferman hit an RBI double to left field to give CTX an early 1-0 advantage.

Redlands responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame and tacked on another in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

In the sixth, Caleb Rodriguez hit an RBI single and was subsequently brought home when Michael Evan roped a single through the left side to score two to put the Tornados up 4-3.

The Bulldogs got a solo home run in the seventh to tie the game at four and threatened to take the lead when they had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth. Justin Traxler, however, was not going to let that happen as he induced a pop-out and a ground out to get out of the jam.

Traxler, a senior from Austin, Texas, found himself in trouble once again in the bottom half of the 10th with another bases loaded one out situation. He was able to get out of the jam once again thanks to a pop-out and a strikeout to send the game into the 11th.

In the 12th, Leiferman led the inning off with his second double of the game. After a fielder's choice and an intentional walk, Carson Cox stepped to the plate with the bases juiced and one down.

Cox, a junior from Cotulla, Texas, answered the call by lining a two-RBI double down the left field line to score both Leiferman and Jacob Stegent.

Leiferman (1-0) trotted out to the mound and, after walking the first batter, got a fly-out to right and a quick 4-6-3 double play to end it.

Rodriguez, Cox, Leiferman, Casen Novak and Michael Evan all had multi-hit games for CTX. Novak, a sophomore from Flatonia, Texas, went 4-for-6 with a run scored in the win.

The Tornados close out the Cactus Classic 2-1 with wins over #2 Cal Lutheran and Redlands. The loss was the first of the season for the Bulldogs.

CTX will take on Sul Ross State this weekend in a non-conference matchup. The first game of the series will be at 7:00 on Friday night at Tornado Field.
