AUSTIN, Texas –
Matthew Williams pitched a complete game shutout in game one to highlight the day as the Concordia Texas baseball team split two games against Sul Ross Thursday at Tornado Field.
The Tornados got a 10-0 win in the abbreviated seven-inning first game and fell 21-8 in game two to move to 5-4 on the year.
In game one, Williams, a sophomore from Austin, Texas, pitched 7.0 innings while allowing just three hits and striking out four to pick up the win.
In the first inning, CTX got an RBI singles from
Bret Leiferman and
Reed Carlton as well as a sacrifice fly from
Michael Evan to take an early 3-0 lead.
CTX added five runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from
Casen Novak and Leiferman.
Novak, a sophomore from Flatonia, Texas, and Leiferman, a junior out of Round Rock, Texas, went a combined 5-for-6 with three RBIs and five runs scored in game one.
Carson Cox brought home the ninth run of the game on a ground-rule double to left center and came around to score on an error later in the inning.
Game two was a high scoring affair, with both teams racking up double digit hits.
The Lobos took an early 3-0 lead after the top half of the second, but the Tornados fought back with three runs of their own to tie the game at three in the second.
After SRSU took a 4-3 lead in the third, CTX responded with another three run inning to take a 6-4 lead. In the inning, the Tornados got RBI singles from both
Daniel Williams and
Clarence Guidry III to take a two run lead.
Sul Ross continued their offensive tear, however, as they put up six runs in the top half of the fifth to take a 10-6 lead they would not relinquish.
Caleb Rodriguez hit an RBI single to right and
Michael Evan came home on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to two in the bottom half of the fourth, but the Lobos scored the final 11 runs of the game to take home the 13 run victory.
Kylen Harrell was the most effective arm out of the bullpen for the Tornados, racking up seven strikeouts over 3.0 innings while allowing three earned runs.
CTX and SRSU will continue their three-game set with the rubber match Friday at Tornado Field beginning at 5:00 p.m.
