Tornados clinch series win over Sul Ross

AUSTIN, Texas – Cole Angelle and Justin Traxler combined to give up just five hits and three runs and Bret Leiferman racked up for RBIs to help the Concordia Texas baseball team grab an 11-3 series clinching win over Sul Ross on Friday at Tornado Field.

Angelle, a senior from Katy, Texas, picked up his first win of the year after allowing two runs on two hits and striking out five over 5.0 innings of work while Traxler, a senior from Austin, Texas, got his second save of the season after fanning seven batters over the final four innings.

CTX moved to 6-4 on the year and picked up their fourth win in their last five games.

The Tornados started off the scoring in the third when Leiferman hit an RBI groundout to put CTX up 1-0.

Leirferman, a junior from Round Rock, Texas, went 1-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the win.

In the fourth, CTX tacked on five more runs thanks in large part to an RBI single from Caleb Maddox and a bases loaded three-RBI double from Leiferman.

After adding another run in the fifth to make it 7-0, the Lobos scored two in the top of the sixth and had the bases loaded with nobody out. Coming on in relief, Traxler calmly induced pop out and got back-to-back strikeouts to limit the damage.

The Tornados responded with three runs of their own, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Michael Evan, to push the lead to 10-2.

SRSU produced a run in the top of the eighth, but CTX answered once again in the bottom half to secure the eight run victory.

In the win, the Tornados received multi-hit efforts from both Jacob Gwynne as well as Casen Novak. Gwynne, a sophomore out of Friendswood, Texas, hit two doubles in the game and finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Next up, CTX will travel to Jackson, Mississippi, to play three games in the Millsaps College Tournament. The final non-conference weekend of the year begins with a 3:00 p.m. game against Washington University St. Louis at Twenty Field on Friday.
