ABILENE, Texas – Concordia Texas baseball head coach
Tommy Boggs won his 243rd game at CTX in game two of the doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons to become the all-time wins leader in Tornados baseball history Saturday at Hunter Field.
CTX dropped the first game of the doubleheader 7-5 before winning the series rubber match 10-7 to move to 16-8, 9-3 ASC.
With the win in game two, Boggs moved one win ahead of Concordia Texas Hall of Famer Mike Gardner on the all-time wins list in school history.
In the first game, CTX held an early 5-0 lead but could not hold it as they fell 7-5.
The Tornados scored a single run in both the first and second innings on RBI singles by
Daniel Williams and
Clarence Guidry III.
In the third, CTX got two more RBI singles this time from
Reed Carlton and
Michael Evan. The lead was extended to 5-0 when
Ryan Clouse hit a fielder's choice groundout to second base in the fourth.
The Cowboys answered with a double down the left field line in the bottom half fourth and a six run sixth, capped off by a three-run homer to take a 7-5 lead.
In game two, the Tornados jumped ahead early once again with four runs in the top half of the first, highlighted by a solo home run off the bat of
Cole Angelle.
After HSU scored a run in the bottom half, CTX responded with a run in the top of the second on RBI single by
Carson Cox.
Hardin-Simmons plated a run in the bottom half of the third and fourth innings, but the Tornados again answered right back with two runs on a two-RBI single from
Reed Carlton.
The Cowboys would not go away quietly, however, as they produced two more runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 7-5.
Jacob Stegent extended the lead to three once again on an RBI double in the top of the seventh, but HSU proceeded to add two more runs in the bottom half to make it 8-7.
In the ninth, Guidry III provided an insurance run with an RBI single up the middle to bring home
Daniel Williams and subsequently scored on an RBI double from
Casen Novak to put the score at 10-7.
Novak, a sophomore from Flatonia, Texas, finished game two 4-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
On the mound,
Kylen Harrell was extremely effective in relief, pitching 2.2 innings while allowing no runs and no hits while striking out three.
Justin Traxler came on with two on and two outs in the bottom of the ninth and got a popout to pick up his fifth save of the season and his second in two days.
Next up, CTX will look to remain on top of the ASC standings with a three-game series against Louisiana College starting with a doubleheader on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Tornado Field.
