AUSTIN, Texas – With the score tied and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th, Jacob Gywnne stepped up to the plate and was hit by a pitch to give the Concordia Texas baseball team a 2-1 victory and complete the sweep over Louisiana College on Friday at Tornado Field.
With the win, the Tornados move to 19-8, 12-3 in the American Southwest Conference as they remain in first place in the ASC standings.
In the 10th inning, CTX got a leadoff single from
Carson Cox and he was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Daniel Williams. After
Reed Carlton was intentionally walked,
Michael Evan reached on an error by the third baseman to load the bases.
Gywnne, a sophomore out of Friendswood, Texas, came in to pinch-hit and wore a fastball to bring home Cox and give the Tornados a 2-1 win.
CTX jumped ahead early, scoring a run in the first inning on an RBI single up the middle off the bat of Cox.
The score remained 1-0 until the eighth inning, as starting pitcher
Calvin Bush was fantastic on the mound. Bush, a junior from Austin, Texas, tossed 5.0+ scoreless innings while giving up no hits and striking out a career-high 12 batters. The 12 strikeouts were the most by a Concordia pitcher this season.
Louisiana College kept the game close, however, and tied the score on an RBI single in the eighth inning. The Wildcats had a chance to take the lead in the ninth, but
Justin Traxler (3-0) escaped a bases loaded one out situation with a fielder's choice ground out and a strikeout.
In all, Tornados' pitchers tied a school record with 18 strikeouts in the win. The 18 Ks are the most since CTX fanned 18 against Sul Ross State on March 20, 2008.
Next up, Concordia will head to Richardson, Texas, to take on UT Dallas in an ASC matchup starting Friday at 2:00 p.m.
