AUSTIN, Texas – In a game that lasted exactly four hours and went to extra innings, the Concordia Texas baseball team fell to top-ranked Trinity 3-2 in 11 innings at Tornado Field Tuesday night.
CTX used seven different pitchers on the night, but were unable to hold a lead on two separate occasions as they moved to 20-11 overall.
The game was a pitchers duel throughout, with neither team scoring in the first five innings. The Tornados broke through in the sixth, however, when
Casen Novak reached on a fielder's choice to bring home
Ryan Clouse.
The Tigers responded with a run of their own on an RBI single to tie the game at one in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom half of the inning, CTX answered with a run when pinch runner
Thomas Gore raced home on a wild pitch.
The top team in NCAA DIII did not go away quietly, however, as they again tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the eighth to make the score 2-2.
In the 11th inning, Trinity went ahead for the first time in the ballgame thanks to a leadoff single and an RBI double.
The Tornados got runners on first and second with one away in the bottom of the 11th, but
Daniel Williams grounded into a double play to seal the win for the Tigers.
On the mound, CTX got solid contributions from a number of arms, including
Kylen Harrell who got the start and pitched 3.0 innings while allowing no runs on two hits and striking out two.
Ryan Capel,
Justin Traxler and
Peyton Lero were all also effective on the hill, combining to throw 3.2 innings, giving up no runs on just one hit.
Next up, the Tornados will return to American Southwest Conference action with a three-game set against Howard Payne beginning Friday night at Tornado Field at 7:00 p.m.
