TYLER, Texas – The Concordia Texas baseball team started the final American Southwest Conference series of the regular season with a doubleheader split against UT Tyler Saturday at Irwin Field.
The Tornados won game one 7-1 before falling in game two 13-0 to move to 24-12, 17-6 ASC.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Tornados did all of their damage in one inning, scoring seven runs in the fourth.
Ryan Clouse started the scoring with a two-RBI single through the left side with the bases loaded and was followed by a sacrifice fly by
Clarence Guidry III.
Reed Carlton broke the game open when he ripped a two-RBI double down the left field line. After a pitching change, Carlton was brought home when
Caleb Rodriguez hit a two-RBI single through the right side to make the score 7-0.
Carlton, a junior from Austin, Texas, finished game one 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a double and one run scored.
On the mound,
Matthew Williams (5-3) was fantastic once again, tossing his fourth complete game of the season. The sophomore out of Austin, Texas, finished the day tossing 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run and striking out six while throwing just 81 pitches.
The Patriots flipped the script in game two, scoring first with a three-run fifth inning and adding one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to make the score 5-0.
The game was broken open in the eighth when UT Tyler put an eight spot on the board to swell the lead to 13-0.
The finale of the three-game set will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Tyler, Texas. The Tornados will be looking to remain in first place in the ASC with a victory.
