AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's soccer team prepares for its 10th straight American Southwest Conference Tournament appearance when they face the top seed in the league, Hardin-Simmons on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Abilene, Texas.
The Tornados slid into the tournament as the No. 8 seed after finishing in a tie with East Texas Baptist and Ozarks at 4-14, 4-7 ASC in the standings, but held a better-combined head-to-head record against the Tigers and Eagles to earn the tournament bid.
First year head coach
Andy Tunnicliffe is proud of his team's accomplishment of reaching the ASC Tournament.
"To make the ASC tournament this year is a fantastic achievement for us," Tunnicliffe said. "We have had so many obstacles to cope with throughout the season and we have come through with a real positive energy."
Concordia Texas will face the No. 1 seed in the tournament, the Cowgirls, on Tuesday at 5 p.m., at the HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene, Texas.
Hardin-Simmons are the defending ASC Tournament champions and have won the last 16 league tournament titles.
It is a tall task for the Tornados, but coach Tunnicliffe believes in his team.
"We really feel like we have performed at a high level on a number of occasions," Tunnicliffe said. "Qualifying is just rewards for our effort since August. This opportunity to enter postseason play and represent CTX against the conference champions is one that we are relishing as a team."
In their regular season matchup, CTX fell on the road to HSU 4-0, but held them scoreless in the second half.
The Tornados will rely on senior
Kaycee Moore to jump-start the offense. The Azle, Texas native leads the team in goals scored with four on the season as well as a team-high five assists. She has 19 goals in her career, which ranks third all-time in program history.
Meanwhile, in goal,
Sofie Gomez looks to protect the net after having racked up 76 saves in her first year at CTX, ranking fifth among conference leaders.
The Tornados will look to reach the ASC semifinals for the first time since the 2011 season and pick up their first win over the Cowgirls in program history.
Concordia Texas will take on Hardin-Simmons on Tuesday at 5 p.m. from the HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene, Texas, with a spot in ASC Tournament semifinals on the line.
