AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The No. 13 Concordia Texas baseball team used three four-run innings to open the RussMatt Tournament with a bang on Friday, racking up 16 hits in a 15-7 victory over St. Scholastica at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.
Bret Leiferman was phenomenal at the plate, finishing the day 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, five RBIs and two runs scored as No. 13 CTX moved to 15-1 on the season. With the triple, Leiferman, a junior out of Round Rock, Texas, set the school record for most triples in a career with 13.
Every starter for the Tornados recorded a hit in the win as CTX produced their most hits and runs of the season. The win also pushed the win streak to 10 consecutive games, the longest for the program since 2015.
The Tornados got the scoring started in the first when
Jacob Gwynne raced home on an RBI single to right off the bat of Leiferman.
After the Saints tied the game at one in the bottom of the second, CTX responded with four runs in the top of the third to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Leiferman struck again to start the scoring in the inning with a two-RBI triple to left center and came around to score after a perfect squeeze bunt from
Jacob Stegent. The lead swelled to 5-1 thanks to an RBI single to center from
Ryan Clouse.
The fourth inning looked much like the third for the Tornados as they once again put up a four spot in the inning to grow the lead.
Carson Cox started the rally with an RBI single to bring home
Casen Novak. After a bases loaded walk from Leiferman and a wild pitch, Stegent made the score 9-2 thanks to a sacrifice fly to right field.
St. Scholastica did not go away quietly scoring a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to inch closer. CTX responded each time, however, with a run in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the Saints at arms-length.
With the score 11-7 heading into the seventh inning, the Tornados put the game away with another four-run inning in the seventh, fueled, once again, by Leiferman.
After
Reed Carlton and Cox reached to start the inning, Leiferman ripped a two-RBI double to left center and eventually came home on a passed ball.
Stegent kept the rally going and made the score 15-7 on an RBI double to left. The senior out of Brenham, Texas, was also fantastic at the plate for CTX going 2-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored.
Michael Smith (2-0) was effective out of the bullpen to pick up the win. Smith, a sophomore from Friendswood, Texas, tossed 2.1 innings, allowing just one run on one hit and striking out three.
The RussMatt Tournament continues on Saturday, as CTX will take on Washington University-St. Louis in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. C.T.
