KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Concordia Texas baseball team's 10-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday, falling to Washington University in St. Louis in a doubleheader on Saturday on day two of the RussMatt Invitational at Osceola Heritage Park.
The Tornados and Bears would play a pair of seven-inning games as each team switched off as the home team.
In game one, CTX would seek to comeback from a three-run deficit, but fall short, losing 5-4.
Jacob Gwynne and
Bret Leiferman would each record two hits in the game as the Tornados tallied nine hits in the game.
Concordia Texas would strike first as
Casen Novak led off the game with a triple. He would come home on a wild pitch to put the Tornados on the board.
WashU would respond with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and led 2-1 after the first frame. Concordia Texas would come right back with a run in the second on
Marcus Thach's bunt single to tie it up at 2-all.
After the Bears scored three runs in the third, the Tornados would look to rally.
In the fourth, CTX would use a two-out rally bring home two.
Ryan Clouse, who led off the inning with a single, would move to third after back-to-back ground outs and score on Gwynne's RBI single.
Carson Cox would follow with an RBI double to score Gwynne and cut it to 5-4 after four.
In the seventh, Leiferman would work a two-out walk, but the Tornados were unable to capitalize, falling 5-4.
In game two, CTX would struggle at the plate, tallying three hits in a 4-0 defeat.
WashUwould use a four-run second inning to go on top.
In the third,
Cameron Rape would reach on a one-out single and move to second on an error, but a fly out and strikeout would end the Tornados' threat.
In the seventh, CTX would have runners on second and third after a Cox single and Leiferman double began the inning. The Tornados were unable to take advantage though, as the next three batters would go down in order, falling 4-0 to end the day.
Concordia Texas will look to begin a new streak at the RussMatt Invitational on Sunday when they face No. 2 Rowan at 9:30 a.m. C.T. in Auburndale, Fla., at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park No. 5.
