AUBURNDALE, Fla. –
Matthew Williams was nearly untouchable as he tossed his third consecutive complete game shutout and the Concordia Texas baseball team took down No. 2 Rowan 2-0 at the RussMatt Invitational on Sunday at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.
Williams would go the distance for the Tornados, allowing four hits, one walk over nine innings while striking out eight Profs. He extended his scoreless inning streak to 23 and remains undefeated on the season, picking up his fifth win.
Concordia Texas and Rowan were scoreless through the first three frames, but the Tornados would take the lead in the fourth.
Jacob Gwynne, who went 3-for-4 from the plate, would single to lead off the inning.
Bret Leiferman would reach on a hit by pitch and both runners moved up a base after a wild pitch.
Reed Carlton would come through with an RBI groundout and CTX led 1-0 after four.
After allowing three hits in the first three innings, Williams would find a groove and take over, allowing only one runner to reach over the next five frames.
In the eighth, the Tornados would tack on an insurance run. After back-to-back strikeouts to begin the inning,
Casen Novak reached on a single and advanced to second on a steal. Gwynne would score Novak on a bloop single to right and make it 2-0 going into the ninth.
In the ninth, the Profs would not go down easily, leading off with a single up the middle. It was no sweat for Williams though, inducing a ground ball double play to clear the bases. He would close out the game with a ground ball to short as CTX defeated Rowan 2-0.
It is the second straight season the Tornados have defeated the No. 2 team in the nation, defeating Cal Lutheran back on Feb. 10 last season and ties the program record for their highest ranked win.
Concordia Texas will take a day off and return to the field on Tuesday to close out the RussMatt Invitational, facing Endicott at 12:45 p.m. C.T. at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park No. 5.
