AUSTIN, Texas – Behind a three-run home run from
Bret Leiferman and a two-run triple off the bat of
James Carr, the Concordia Texas baseball team picked up an 8-2 win over LeTourneau on Friday at Tornado Field to complete the sweep.
With the win, CTX has now won seven straight games and moves to 27-9 overall and 13-5 in the American Southwest Conference.
After LeTourneau scored first on an RBI groundout in the top of third, the Tornados responded immediately in the bottom half when Leiferman lifted a 1-1 pitch over the right field fence to give CTX a 3-1 lead.
The Tornados tacked on a couple more run in the fourth when
Jacob Gwynne roped a single up the middle to bring home
Ryan Clouse and
Casen Novak.
The Yellow Jackets answered with a single run in the sixth, but could not add any more as
Jim McCabe came out of the bullpen and got the final out of the inning to strand two runners in scoring position.
In the eighth, after a leadoff single from
Jacob Stegent and a walk by Clouse, Carr was called off the bench to pinch hit. The senior from Houston, delivered in a big way with a two-run triple to right center to bring home a pair and was subsequently brought home on a sacrifice fly from Novak to make the score 8-2.
Trey Toney then closed the door in the ninth to give the Tornados the series sweep and help them move into third place in the ASC standings. Toney, a junior from Port Neches, Texas, earned his first save of the season after retiring the final eight hitters in order.
Calvin Bush (3-0) earned the win on the hill after tossing 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while fanning eight.
Following the game, the Tornados honored seniors
Reed Carlton,
