Tornados fall in series opener against UMHB, snap six game win streak

BELTON, Texas – The Concordia Texas baseball team saw their six game winning streak come to an end as they fell 8-2 on the road against Mary Hardin-Baylor at Red Murff Field on Thursday night.

The Tornados scored single runs in the first and ninth innings, but could not produce any more as they dropped to 27-10, 13-6 in American Southwest Conference play.

Casen Novak opened up the scoring for CTX in the top of the first. After reaching on an error, Novak stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Gywnne. Novak then raced home on an RBI groundout off the bat of Bret Leiferman to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead.

UMHB responded, however, with a single run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at one.

The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth when the Cru scratched across another on an RBI single.

With two away in the bottom of the seventh, UMHB broke the game open thanks to a two-RBI single and a pair of errors by CTX.

After the Cru tacked on two more in the eighth to make the score 8-1, the Tornados were able to produce their second run of the game after an RBI groundout off the bat of Novak brought home pinch hitter Collin Mask.

Michael Smith (5-1) was effective in his start for CTX, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing two runs on just four hits and striking out four.
