NCAA PREVIEW: Tornados prepared to compete in third straight NCAA Regional

SEGUIN, Texas – After winning the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the first time since 2012, the Concordia Texas baseball team is set to participate in their third consecutive NCAA Regional, starting on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Katt-Isabel Field against regional host Texas Lutheran.

This season, the Tornados have compiled a 34-10 overall record, giving them the most wins in a single season since the 2012 season. By virtue of this successful season, CTX earned the No. 3 seed in the TLU Regional featuring No. 1 Trinity (Texas), No. 2 Texas Lutheran and No. 4 Franklin.

The four teams will compete in a four-team double elimination bracket from Friday to Sunday to determine who will advance to the NCAA West Super Regional round against the winner of Chapman and Whitman.

After starting the year 19-8, the Tornados are 15-2 in their last 17 contests, including a perfect 5-0 run through both rounds of the ASC Tournament.

Concordia Texas has been dominant on the mound all season, led by starting pitchers Matthew Williams and Calvin Bush.

Williams, a junior out of Austin, Texas, is 11-1 with a 3.20 ERA and 83 strikeouts through 81.2 innings on the hill. His 11 wins this season is tied for second in school history while his 82 punch outs ranks 12th.

Bush, meanwhile, has come on strong late in the season, racking up at least 13 strikeouts in each of his last three starts. The junior from Austin, Texas, has 92 strikeouts, is 5-0 with a 1.87 ERA and ranks fourth in all of NCAA D-III with 14.36 strikeouts per nine innings.

In the bullpen, CTX has gotten solid production from a number of players including ASC Tournament Gold Bracket Championship MVP Diego Cruz-Garcia. The sophomore from Austin, Texas, is 3-1 with a 2.37 ERA. In his last four appearances, Cruz-Garcia has allowed no runs on just three hits while fanning 15 over 11.2 innings.

Offensively, the Tornados' balanced attacked is led by junior outfielder Bret Leiferman. The Round Rock, Texas native is hitting a team-high .377 with five homers, seven doubles and 38 RBIs this season.

Carson Cox and Casen Novak have also been a consistent option at the plate for CTX, both batting .352 this season.

Cox, a senior from Cotulla, Texas, hit .422 over the last 17 games of the season to raise his batting average from .306 to .352. Novak, a junior out of Flatonia, Texas, was able to hit safely in 34 of the 44 games he played in while also leading the Tornados with 13 stolen bases this year.
