Tornados fall to Chapman in game one of NCAA Super Regional

ORANGE, Calif. – Carson Cox had a pair of hits, including an RBI single, but the Concordia Texas baseball team fell short to No. 6 Chapman 11-3 in the first game of a best-of-three series of the NCAA Super Regionals on Friday.

The Tornados, in the midst of their best postseason run since 2002, faced the Panthers in their home stadium at W.O. Hart Park.

Concordia Texas would strike first, pushing across a run in the first inning.

After two quick outs to begin the inning, Bret Leiferman started a rally, working a walk. Reed Carlton followed with a single to right, moving Leiferman to third for Cox. The Cotulla, Texas native singled up the middle to score Leiferman and give the Tornados a 1-0 lead.

Matthew Williams, making his first start since throwing a no-hitter against Franklin, posted back-to-back scoreless frames to begin the game. Chapman, though, took a 4-1 advantage in the third thanks in part to a three-run home run.

In the fourth, the Tornados would get back a run on Ryan Clouse's sac fly after Cox led off the inning with a double to cut it to 4-2, but continued to trail after five innings played.

The Panthers would add to their lead, scoring runs in three of the next four innings and took game one 11-3.

Cox finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Leiferman had a hit, two walks and scored twice.

Concordia Texas will put their season on the line on Saturday, facing Chapman at 1 p.m. from W.O. Hart Park in Orange, Calif. With a win, the Tornados would force a winner-take-all game three scheduled to be played an hour after the conclusion of game two.
