Tornados impress at ASC Fall Tournament

| BOX SCORE 2 ABILENE, Texas – Joshua Bode, Robin van Der Heijden and Esteban Arredondo all won their singles flight championships and the Concordia Texas men's tennis team had a strong showing at the American Southwest Conference Fall Tournament on Saturday.

The two-day tournament began on Friday with teams from around the conference as well as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Association competing in multiple singles and doubles flights.

Bode, a 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American, was dominant in the flight A singles bracket, winning all three of his matches in straight sets, including a 6-2, 6-2 win over McMurry's Carlos Martinez in the final.

Van Der Heijden, a transfer from North Greenville University, represented the Tornados in flight B singles bracket. The Netherlands native also took care of business, as he never dropped a set on his way to clinching the championship with a 7-5, 6-2 victory against LeTourneau's Christian Farris.

Arredondo, meanwhile, played in the flight C singles bracket and continued the theme for CTX. The sophomore out of The Woodlands, Texas, hardly broke a sweat as he cruised through the flight to win the title, wrapping it up with a 6-3, 6-0 win over LeTourneau's Nathan Schmidt in the final.

Jorge Garcia, Riley O'Connor and Jesse West would also win their respective flights for the Tornados.

Garcia, playing in flight G, would roll in straight sets in all three matches to claim the singles title, securing it with a 6-3, 7-5 win over St. Thomas (TX)'s Quashi Philips.

O'Connor went 3-0 in his flight H matches, including a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 win in the title match, while West defeated teammate Corbin Hayes in the final of flight K.

Other highlights from the singles flights included Michael Davis and Evan Pena Jr. both reaching the title matches of flights E and F before falling in the finals, respectively.

In the doubles matches, Bode and Van Der Heuden teamed up in flight A. The duo would split their first two matches before winning the third place match 6-4 over the Yellow Jackets. Meanwhile, Arredondo and Adrian Munguia, playing in flight B, dropped their opening match before bouncing back to win the consolation title with a 6-3 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Garcia and O'Connor, Hayes and West, and Naiser and Villarreal closed out the tournament for CTX, winning their respective doubles flights.

In flight D, Garcia and O'Connor would win their first two matches handily before a dominating 8-1 victory in the final. Hayes and West, playing in flight E, would reach the final easily before winning the tiebreaker of the championship match 7-5 to claim the title.

Jacob Naiser and Villarreal, meanwhile, teamed up in flight F. After a first-round bye, the duo would win their next match 6-1 before a 8-5 victory in the final.

Next, CTX will next turn their attention to the ITA Regional, which will be held in Georgetown, Texas from Sept. 26-29 as Bode will look to defend his singles title.
