Tornados' late inning mistakes the difference in loss to No. 3 Trinity

AUSTIN, Texas – In a classic pitcher's duel Calvin Bush tossed seven no-hit innings, struck out 11 batters, but a couple of late defensive errors proved to be the downfall for the Concordia Texas baseball team, falling short to No. 3 Trinity 6-2 on Saturday in the second day of the Concordia Classic.

Bush was un-hittable on the mound for the Tornados, powering through seven innings of work in only his second start of the season. He allowed no hits, issued only five walks and struck out 11 Tigers, leaving the mound with the game tied at 0-0.

Meanwhile, offensively, CTX had a batter reach in five of the first seven innings, but was unable to take advantage and kept off the board.

Hayden Schroeder entered in relief of Bush to start the eighth, where the Tigers put up five runs and took advantage of two errors in the inning to take the game's first lead.

The Tornados responded in the bottom half of the inning though as the first three batters reached on a pair of singles and a walk. One out later, Owen Hill worked an RBI walk to bring home CTX's first run of the game and cut it to 5-1.

Grayson Lee followed with an RBI walk of his own, but Jayden Hernandez and Chris Williams were retired in order, ending the Tornados' threat and trailed 5-2 after eight frames.

Trinity added an insurance run in the ninth and CTX was unable to rally in their final at-bat, falling 6-2.

The Tornados finished with eight hits as a team led by Casen Novak, Bret Leiferman and Hernandez, who each registered two hits for the day. Jacob Gwynne, meanwhile, walked twice in five at-bats.

Leiferman is now six hits away from breaking the program's all-time hits record set by Scott Bunting from 2002-05.

Concordia Texas will wrap up its homestand on Sunday during the final day of the Concordia Classic, facing La Verne at 11 a.m. at Tornado Field.
