AUSTIN, Texas – Tied at 2-all heading into the seventh inning, the Concordia Texas baseball team exploded for 10 runs, including grand slams hit by
Grayson Lee and
Casen Novak, to complete the sweep of Louisiana College 12-2 on Saturday.
The Tornados and Wildcats were in a stalemate through the first six innings, combining for only nine hits and tied at 2-2.
In the seventh inning though, CTX's bats came alive.
After a ground out started the inning, the next three batters would reach for the Tornados, loading the bases for Lee. On a 2-1 pitch, Lee sent a shot over the left field wall for a grand slam and a 6-2 lead. It was Lee's first home run of the season.
A walk, a
Kalen Moreno single and a hit by pitch continued the inning for CTX, reloading the bases. One out later,
Dakota Limon was called on to pinch-hit. He would rip a double just inside the right field line, scoring two runs and pushing the Tornados' advantage to 8-2.
Chris Williams, in his second at-bat of the inning, worked a walk to load the bases once more as Novak came to the plate.
On the first pitch, Novak hit his second home run of the season and the second grand slam of the inning as CTX defeated LC by run-rule 12-2.
Novak,
Bret Leiferman and Lee, at the top of the order, combined to hit 7-for-12 with five runs scored and 10 RBIs. Williams, meanwhile, in the nine-hole, had a hit, a walk and scored three times for the Tornados.
Diego Cruz-Garcia started on the mound for CTX, tossing four scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six Wildcats.
Michael Smith came on in relief in the fifth and picked up his second win of the season after a three-inning outing where he allowed a pair of hits and struck out four batters.
With the win, the Tornados remain perfect in conference play and are tied for first in the conference standings.
Concordia Texas will look to continue their winning ways on the road when they travel to Marshall, Texas for a three-game set against East Texas Baptist, opening the series on Friday at 7 p.m.
