Tornados fall on the road to Howard Payne

BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas – Madi Maxwell set a new career-high with 22 points, but the Concordia Texas women's basketball team fell short on the road, suffering a 71-84 loss against Howard Payne on Thursday.
 
Madi Maxwell made her free throws count, shooting 11-of-12 from the charity stripe on her way to a stellar performance with 22 points and eight rebounds. Allie Garza also scored in double-digits, recording 12 points on 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
 
The Tornados traded buckets with the Yellow Jackets out of the gate, holding a 12-11 lead six minutes into the game thanks to six points from Maxwell and two buckets in the paint from Wendel'Lyn Moblin. The Tornados exploded in the last 4:02 of the period, outscoring HPU 10-5 to close out the quarter behind a three-pointer from Erin Blaschke, and ended the first quarter with a 22-16 advantage.
 
Concordia Texas struggled in the second period, HPU outscoring them 18-14 in the period, but a combined 7-of-8 free throw shooting from Maxwell and Chelsea Cogborn kept the Tornados afloat as they held on to a 36-34 lead at the halfway point.
 
Howard Payne started the second half hot, leading by six with 2:58 left to play in the third quarter, but a pair of three-pointers from Garza and Falyn Taylor and brought the Tornados back within one. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Tornados trailed 52-53.
 
The Tornados had no answer for the hot shooting of HPU in the fourth quarter, and despite shooting 46.7% from the field in the period CTX fell to the Yellow Jackets 84-71.
 
Cogborn had a productive game, scoring seven points and grabbing six rebounds.
 
The Tornados will look for redemption as they travel to Alpine, Texas to face off against Sul Ross State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
