Baseball Takes Game One at Hardin-Simmons

The Tornados surged ahead with three runs in the fifth.

AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia baseball team claimed game one of the series against Hardin-Simmons University with an 8-4 win. The Tornados exploded for three runs in the fifth inning to gain separation at Hunter Field on Friday night.

The Cowboys scored first in the second inning, but a sac fly by Aaron Gomez evened the score in the top of the third. Hardin-Simmons reclaimed the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the frame, while a Matthew Armes RBI-single to bring home Brandon Goynes knotted the game up in the following half-inning.

The Tornados claimed the go-ahead run in the fifth inning when Julian Swift found a gap in left centerfield to round Zach Seigrist to home. They would add two more runs following a RBI-bunt by Gomez and a RBI-single by Robert Villa.

HSU cut into the Tornados' lead with a homer in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-3. With two men in scoring position in the top of the eighth, Gomez posted another RBI with an infield single.

The Cowboys notched their second home run of the game in the eighth inning, but a two-RBI double to left field by Seigrist put the game out of reach as the Concordia claimed an 8-4 game one victory.

Concordia Texas will now conclude the series with Hardin-Simmons in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
