Baseball Takes Series Over LeTourneau

Otto Franz tossed a complete game in game one of the doubleheader on Sunday.

AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas baseball team won the series by splitting the doubleheader on day two against LeTourneau University. Otto Franz (five strikeouts) tossed a complete game in the game one victory of the doubleheader at Conrad-Vernon Field.

GAME ONE: W, 6-1 (7 Innings)

The Tornados played clean baseball in game one as they turned six LeTourneau errors into four runs. After loading the bases in the first, a sacrifice fly by Brandon Goynes scored Julian Swift to get them on the board. 

CTX then took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth when a bases-loaded, RBI-single by Zach Seigrist scored Kalen Clark. The Yellowjackets cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own, but Concordia tallied another two runs in the fifth as Colby Christian & Goynes crossed the plate for a 4-1 lead. 

Swift scored again in the sixth with a RBI single down the right field line by Chris Morrow in the sixth, and then Swift collected a RBI single up the middle to score Clark in the seventh for the final run of the game.

GAME TWO: L, 9-8

The Yellowjackets came out on fire in game two as they turned in six runs in the first. After a scoreless second by both teams, CTX made it a 6-2 game with runs scored by Mason Vasquez & Morrow. LeTourneau pushed the lead back up to six runs with a pair of scores in the bottom of the inning. 

Concordia loaded the bases in the fourth as Efren Sanchez Jr. drew a RBI walk to score Swift. Landon Hyle then brought Morrow home on a fielder's choice RBI. The Tornados then cut the deficit in half at 8-5 when Vasquez used saavy base running to score from third.

The Tornados once again loaded the bases in the fifth and Swift singled to right field to score Armes. Two batters later, Morrow was hit by a pitch to score Seigrist for an 8-7 score heading into the sixth. 

With neither team scoring in the sixth-eighth  innings, Concordia was down to their final out prior to Seigrist reaching on the Yellowjackets' sixth error of game two. Swift would then come in clutch and tie the game with a RBI-triple to score Seigrist. In the bottom half of the ninth, the Yellowjackets would avoid a sweep with a walk-off homerun.

Concordia Texas will now return home for a non-conference game against Trinity this Tuesday, March 19th. There will be tailgate festivities outside the baseball field pregame. First pitch is set for 6pm.
