BRIDGEWATER, Massachusetts - The Concordia Texas baseball team opened up their first game of the NCAA tournament with a 7-6 instant classic victory over Oswego University. Leadoff man Zach Seigrist launched the walk-off homer, while Otto Franz became the program's leader in career strikeouts at Alumni Field on Friday.
Franz (294 strikeouts), who is also now the program's leader in innings pitched (329.2), broke Matthew Williams' previous record of 291 strikeouts. His 294 strikeouts now also ranks fourth all-time in SCAC history.
Oswego notched a run in the top of the first, but CTX would respond in the bottom half with a Colby Christian two-RBI single that scored Aaron Gomez & Kalen Clark. Logan Smith made it 3-1 by scoring Christian with a ribby through the left side. The Tornados would then go up 5-1 after the first when Carson Riley put the ball in play and a fielding error allowed Matthew Armes & Logan Smith to score.
The Lakers homered in the second, but Concordia extended the lead back out to four in the fourth frame with a Clark groundout-RBI that scored Riley. The Lakers scored a pair of runs in the fifth to make it 6-4, & they would tie the game in seventh.
After a valiant effort from Franz, he would retire his final batter in the eighth & Ralph Wallace III stepped in to collect the final five outs. Down to the final out in the ninth, Seigrist would clear left field with a 400+ nuke to walk off the Regional Opener.
Concordia Texas will next face off with the regional's top seed Endicott with a spot in the championship series on the line. First pitch is set for 11am CST.
