ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Concordia University Texas men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 1-0 victory over McMurry University on Saturday at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.
The Tornados (2-2) honored their senior class after picking up their second win of the season behind an early goal from Nehemia Harper and a strong defensive performance.
CTX controlled the attack early and broke through in the 15th minute. After a McMurry foul inside the box, Harper stepped to the penalty spot and converted the opportunity at the 14:18 mark for his first goal of the season, giving the Tornados a 1-0 advantage.
Concordia continued to apply pressure throughout the opening half. Jesse Garfias put a header on frame in the 10th minute, while Mark Wilson, Edmond Elone and Yadiel Cardona-López all generated opportunities as CTX carried the one-goal advantage into halftime.
The Tornados outshot McMurry 11-3 in the opening 45 minutes and finished the match with a 15-7 advantage in shots. CTX also placed seven attempts on goal and earned all five corner kicks in the contest.
McMurry increased its pressure in the second half, but senior goalkeeper Leonel Cuellar kept the War Hawks off the scoreboard. Cuellar stopped shots in the 59th and 63rd minutes before making another save in the 82nd minute to preserve the one-goal advantage.
Cuellar finished with five saves in 90 minutes to earn the clean sheet on Senior Day. Harper led the Tornados offensively with three shots and two shots on goal, while Elone generated a match-high six attempts.
The Tornados closed out the final minutes defensively to secure the 1-0 victory in front of 140 fans.
Concordia Texas will next head to Waxahachie, Texas to take on Nelson University this Tuesday, September 15th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
