AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas volleyball team opened its home slate Tuesday evening against Schreiner University inside the Deb & Don Christian Fieldhouse. The Tornados battled throughout the night, but the Mountaineers earned a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 27-25) victory. CTX moved to 3-3 on the season.
The opening set featured seven ties and three lead changes as the two teams went back and forth early. Schreiner eventually created separation to take the first set, 25-19. The Mountaineers carried the momentum into the second frame and claimed a 25-14 win to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Concordia responded with its best offensive set of the night in the third, recording 13 kills while hitting .114. The Tornados pushed Schreiner throughout a frame that featured 10 ties. CTX extended the set beyond 25 points before the Mountaineers escaped with a 27-25 win to complete the sweep.
Brooklynne Fitzgerald paced the Tornados with 10 kills and 10 digs for a double-double while adding two service aces. Aubrey Hughes delivered an efficient performance with eight kills and no errors on 14 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage. Samantha Taylor added six kills.
The CTX offense was directed by McKinley Grimm and Aniyah Tompkins, who finished with 15 and 12 assists, respectively. Defensively, Jade Romero and Lianna Kearns each collected a team-high 14 digs as Concordia totaled 56 digs on the night.
Concordia will look to bounce back next Tuesday in Abilene, Texas where they will take on Hardin-Simmons. First serve is scheduled for 6pm.
