KERRVILLE, Texas – The Concordia University Texas men's soccer team battled back from an early deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against Schreiner University on Thursday at Mountaineer Soccer Field. The result moved the Tornados to 2-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.
Schreiner struck first in the 14th minute to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 advantage. Concordia responded by generating several opportunities throughout the remainder of the opening half but entered the break trailing by one.
The Tornados came out aggressively in the second half and controlled much of the possession as they searched for the equalizer. Their pressure paid off in the 61st minute when Jesse Garfias stepped to the penalty spot and converted to even the match at 1-1.
Concordia continued to push for the go-ahead goal down the stretch. Artian Rifati put an attempt on frame in the 85th minute before Ayden Hildreth forced another save in the 89th, but Schreiner kept both attempts out to preserve the draw.
The Tornados finished with an 8-5 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge during the second half. Concordia placed three shots on goal compared to one for Schreiner. Goalkeeper Leonel Cuellar played all 90 minutes in goal for CTX.
Concordia Texas will next head to Georgetown, Texas to take on Southwestern this Sunday, September 20th. Kickoff is scheduled for 11am.
