ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Concordia University Texas women's soccer team celebrated Senior Night with its first win of the season, shutting out Howard Payne University, 2-0, Sunday night at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.
Concordia wasted little time getting on the board. In the 11th minute, senior Maddie Oberholtzer had her penalty kick saved, but stayed with the play and put away the rebound to give the Tornados an early 1-0 advantage.
The Tornados continued to create opportunities throughout the opening half, finishing with 12 shots before the break. Abigail Friday, Lorian Lopez and Isabella Vassallo each put attempts on frame as CTX carried the one-goal advantage into halftime.
Another senior doubled the advantage in the 60th minute when Cecilia Escobar found the back of the net off an assist from Shelby Jones, pushing the Concordia lead to 2-0.
Howard Payne increased the pressure in the second half, but the Tornado defense held firm. Kylie Bourquin played the final 45 minutes in goal and recorded six saves to preserve the shutout, including five saves over the final eight minutes. Emma Guillen started in goal and kept Howard Payne scoreless through the opening half.
Concordia finished with 17 shots and eight shots on goal. Oberholtzer led the Tornados with five shots and two on frame, while Escobar scored on her lone shot on goal.
Concordia Texas will now begin SCAC play this Sunday where they will host the University of Dallas.
