Hardin Simmons too strong for Concordia volleyball

AUSTIN, TX- The Concordia University Texas volleyball team fell to Hardin Simmons in a 28-26, 25-18, 25-14 match Friday night at Round Rock High School in American Southwest Conference (ASC) play. Concordia drops to 7-13 overall and 3-8 in ASC play while, Hardin Simmons improves to 12-6 overall and 9-1.

Set one was a back and forth battle with both teams staying within four points throughout the set. The Tornados led 24-23 but could could not earn the set victory. The set went to extra points with Hardin Simmons eventually picking up the 28-26 win.

Concordia came out flat in the second set. Hardin Simmons took advantage by jumping ahead 18-11, controlling the momentum throughout the set. The Tornados fought their way back within five late in the set but, that wasn't enough as the Cowgirls took set two 25-18.

The Tornados were determined to make something happen in the third set sprinting to a 7-3 lead, but the Cowgirls rallied back, with seven consecutive points taking the lead 10-7, one they would not relinquish. Hardin Simmons took the set 25-18 and match earning their ninth conference win of the season.

Senior Juli Applewhaite (Georgetown, TX) continued her strong play, as of late, with seven kills and 11 assists. Freshman Kevyn Jackson (Baytown, TX) added eight kills. Sara Keithley (Colorado Springs, CO) added 17 digs to lead the CTX defense.

Concordia will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on Schreiner University at 7:00 PM. The site is still being determined. Check the Concordia Athletics website for further information. 

The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be hosting a Tailgate outside the Concordia Texas Field House starting at 5:00 PM Tuesday. All Concordia Student, Faculty and Staff are welcome to attend and support your tornados! Everyone attending will caravan to the match location.
