AUSTIN, Texas -- Theo Ard hit a jumper in the lane with eight seconds remaining to help the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor edge the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team, 85-84, on Thursday night in Concordia Fieldhouse. Senior forward #Brad Walker# posted a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs, for the Tornados (2-5, 1-4 ASC).
With 15 seconds left in the contest, UMHB (4-2, 3-2 ASC) inbounded the ball to Ard who brought it into the front court. Ard dribble to the free throw line then pivoted away from the CTX defender and hit a tough shot in the lane to give the Cru a one-point advantage (85-84). Concordia Texas turned to sophomore point guard #Kenny Williams# who drove the length of the court but was unable to hit the potential game-winning layup in the final second. The Tornados were unable to get off another shot as time expired.
The Tornados led by six points (40-34) at halftime as senior forward #Reza Farahani# knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer. CTX forced 12 turnovers in the first half.
Concordia would lead by as much as nine points (52-43) in the second half, but the Cru would climb back into the game. UMHB went on a 19-9 run, capped off by a layup from Rich Moore, to take a 62-61 lead with 9:34 remaining in the game. CTX would answer with a 13-5 spurt, which put the Tornados back on top by seven (74-67). However, the Cru would yet again battle back and knot the contest at 74-74 with 4:25 remaining.
Junior guard #Jon Hutton# would break the tie as he knocked down a three-point off an assist from Williams. Back-to-back buckets by the Cru would put UMHB ahead by one (78-77) with 3:24 remaining.
The teams would trade baskets and remain tied with 1:12 left (81-81) as Walker tipped in a missed layup by Hutton. Dean Pele would miss a jumper but was able to get his own rebound for the Cru, which set up Zane Johnston's jumper that gave UMHB a two-point lead (83-81) with 37 seconds left.
Following a timeout, Hutton nailed a three-pointer from the corner which sent the stands in a frenzy as the Tornados reclaimed a one-point lead (84-83) with only 25 seconds left. A timeout by UMHB set up the play which decided the contest.
The Tornados have over a week off before their next contest. CTX will travel to Georgetown to participate in the Southwestern University/Trinity University Classic. The Tornados will play Southwestern on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 4 p.m.
