Volleyball Picks Up First Win with Sweep of HTU

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- With a 3-0 sweep of Huston-Tillotson University, the Concordia University Texas volleyball team picked up its first win of the season at the Southwestern University Invitational.

Freshman #Ashley Fernandez# recorded a game high nine kills to lead Concordia Texas.  Junior #Katherine Bianco# posted a career high 28 digs to in the win.

Concordia Texas (1-5) struggled early in the first set as Huston-Tillotson jumped out to an 8-1 lead.  The Tornados climbed back into the game and picked up momentum as sophomore #Kalynn White# recorded a kill which pulled CTX to within four points (12-8).

Concordia Texas claimed the lead a few minutes later as a Rams attack error gave CTX the one-point advantage (14-13).  The Tornados would not trail again in the match.  Fernandez posted a kill to clinch the first-set win for the Tornados, 25-19.

CTX cruised through the second set after running out to a 19-10 lead.  A kill by freshman #Amanda Affolter# would give the Tornados their largest lead at 12 points (23-11).  CTX would win set number two, 25-12.

The Tornados would go up early 9-5 in set number three, but a rally by Huston-Tillotson would see the game become tied at 11-11.  The Tornados immediately turned up the pressure and scored seven consecutive points to lead the set 18-11.  Back-and-forth action would proceed between the two teams before the Tornados wrapped up their first win of the year with a 25-19 set three win.

CTX will look to build off the momentum of its win as they enter American Southwest Conference play Tue., Sept. 15 at Schreiner University.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Kerrville.
