AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia University Texas volleyball team was unable to secure a win in its home opener Friday evening as the Tornados (1-7, 0-2 ASC) were swept in three sets by Hardin-Simmons University by scores of 19-25, 22-25, and 18-25.
Sophomore #Kevyn Jackson# paced CTX offensively, posting eight kills on 18 attack attempts for a .333 hitting percentage.
The opening set saw the Cowgirls (4-4, 1-1 ASC) earn a 25-19 victory, however both teams struggled to find rhythm offensively as each team posted 17 kills combined. CTX hit at a .233 clip in the first set, while Hardin-Simmons posted a .154 hitting percentage.
In the second set, Hardin-Simmons held a 15-10 lead after rattling off five consecutive points behind the serving efforts of Chelsie Fowler. However, Concordia Texas came roaring back to tie the set at 15-15 with senior #Carrie Fisk# leading the way with her serves and outstanding defense. Fisk capped off CTX's short run after making a diving dig, which led a kill that tied the set.
The Tornados would go on a 10-4 run that would put them up 20-18 before Hardin-Simmons managed a run of their own. The Cowgirls answered back with a 7-2 run to close out the second set with a 25-22 win.
Hardin-Simmons staved off several comeback attempts by CTX in the third set and eventually closed out the match by the score of 25-18.
Kaela Parnell and Chelsie Fowler each posted 11 kills to lead the Cowgirls offensively.
Concordia Texas' setting duo of sophomore #Haley Phillips# and freshman #Bianca Martinez# tallied 11 assists and 10 assists, respectively.
The Tornados have little lag time between matches as they will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon. CTX will play host to McMurry University in another ASC tilt at 12 p.m.
