BOX SCORE
ABILENE, Texas -- #Victoria Williams#' goal in the 35th minute was not enough to lift the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team past McMurry University Friday afternoon as McMurry (0-5-1, 0-2-1 ASC) scored the equalizing goal in the 59th minute and the two teams ended the contest tied at 1-1.
Williams scored after a ball bounced off the McMurry goalkeeper to put CTX (2-1-3, 1-1-1 ASC) ahead in the first half. However, McMurry was able to hang in the contest as Courtney Danna finished off a cross from Amber Torres to tie the game at 1-1.
"We had a couple of good chances today," said Concordia Texas head coach Corey Holton. "We hit the crossbar and the post today, but were unable to get that second goal."
CTX freshman defender #Kayla McDonald# preserved the tie for the Tornados as McDonald ran down a McMurry player who was on a breakaway. With freshman goalkeeper #Amanda Benton# out of the net, McDonald came in to knock away the wide-open scoring chance.
Neither team was able to break through the rest of the game, however both teams had solid chances in overtime. CTX's final chance came as Williams missed wide on a shot with 1:57 remaining in the second overtime. McMurry pressured Benton in the final seconds as Kasi Cox's shot was stopped short of the net.
"We possessed and controlled the ball really well today," Holton said. "But, we were just unable to find the back of the net. You have to give McMurry credit for hanging in there and playing well. It's just not the result we were looking for today."
The Tornados outshot McMurry, 19-15, including a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Sophomore midfielder #Kiera Ruck# led the Tornados by taking eight total shots, including two on net. Williams and sophomore #Catey Pace# each posted three total shots for CTX.
The Tornados will have little time to rest after today's contest. CTX will spend the night in Abilene and take on Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
