BELTON, Texas -- Another heartbreaking last-second loss for the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team versus the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor took place on Monday night at the Mayborn Campus Center.
Concordia (6-7, 4-5 American Southwest Conference) held a 78-77 lead with 10.8 seconds left in the contest. Following a timeout, Mary Hardin-Baylor missed a long three-point attempt, but #Brad Walker# was whistled for a foul on the rebound attempt. Ervin Johnson sank a pair of free throws with 1.6 seconds remaining, which put the Cru on top 79-78.
The Tornados were unsuccessful in pulling off a full court pass which was batted away as time expired.
Mary Hardin-Baylor overcame a 14-point deficit to claim the win.
CTX took a 68-66 lead as #Kenny Williams# buried a pair of free throws. A Williams runner on a fastbreak gave the Tornados a four-point lead. CTX stretched it to six as #Collin Perkins# scored on a lay in after Williams was stripped of the ball. The Cru came right back as Dean Pele cut the lead to two with a deep three-pointer.
Walker extended the lead back to four for Concordia but the Cru answered again to keep the lead at two (74-72). A pair of free throws from #Justin Reefer# gave CTX another four-point lead, but Kevin Neal hit a pair of his own. Walker hit a tough runner in the lane but Pele again hit a three-pointer to draw within one (78-77).
Concordia held a 41-36 lead at halftime. The Cru almost slashed the lead by more than half as Theo Ard's halfcourt shot was released after the buzzer.
The Cru had a 21-17 lead with 9:41 to play in the first half, but a Reefer steal and made lay-in followed by a #Nick Haynes# three-pointer gave the Tornados a 22-21 lead. Dorian Purnell scored to reclaim the lead for Mary Hardin-Baylor, but the Tornados answered with back-to-back buckets by #Reza Farahani# and Williams.
The Cru would briefly reclaim a one-point advantage (34-33) but CTX would go on an 8-2 run to close out the half and lead by five.
Walker led all scorers with 22 points. Reefer added 12 and grabbed a game-high nine boards.
Pele led UMHB with 17 points.
The Tornados will return home to play Howard Payne University on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m.
