AUSTIN, Texas --- A header by UTD's Haley Renfro proved to be the difference Thursday, as the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the University of Texas-Dallas in American Southwest Conference action at St. Stephen's Field.
Axita Patel scored the lone goal for CTX as the Tornados fall to (8-6-1, 5-4-1 ASC).
It was a game of what could have been Thursday for CTX as a couple of missed opportunities cost the Tornados a chance to move closer to its quest of qualifying for the ASC conference tournament. Concordia is currently in a three-way tie for sixth place with Mary Hardin-Baylor and East Texas Baptist, with only one of the teams being able to move on with three games left to play in the regular season.
The University of Texas-Dallas (10-5-1, 8-2-1 ASC) was able to get on the board first when Emily Hokanson beat CTX goalkeeper
Tyler Steinbach in the 11th minute to give the Comets a 1-0 advantage. The Tornados came across a great opportunity in the 40 minute when leading scorer
Axita Patel came across a one on one, only to see her shot be deflected at the last moment by a UTD defender.
Concordia came out with a host of energy at the start of the second period to push the ball deep into Comet territory.
Chastity Carrillo took a through ball from Patel and found room inside the six, but her shot was punched just wide of the right post to sustain the 1-0 UTD lead.
The score would remain until the 87th minute when the Comet's Haley Renfro went unchecked and headed in a corner kick giving UTD a 2-0 lead. Concordia would receive its lone goal of the game just two minutes later when
Axita Patel made a cross from the far right corner and the ball magically found the back corner of the net to close the deficit to 2-1.
Time would run out on the Tornado's chances as the officials would end the game just moments later. Concordia had much of the momentum in the second period as CTX outshot UTD eight to six.
In the match Concordia collected eight shots (six on goal) while Texas-Dallas would finish with 14 shots (six on goal).
Axita Patel and
Chastity Carrillo would lead the way offensively as the freshmen both attempted two shots on goal.
Tyler Steinbach made four saves to push her season record to 8-6-1.
The Tornados will return to St. Stephen's field Saturday to host the University of the Ozarks at 1:00 p.m. CTX will honor its lone senior,
Lya Morfitt in its last home game of the year.
