BOX SCORE | ASC STANDINGS
CLINTON, Mississippi --- The Concordia University Texas women's soccer team received a goal from
Axita Patel in the 62nd minute to tie Mississippi College 1-1 in ASC action Thursday. CTX brings its record to (9-6-2, 6-4-2 ASC) with one very important game to go in its conference schedule.
Mississippi put the pressure on the Tornado defense early firing two shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, but goalkeeper
Tyler Steinbach was able to make two of her game-high six saves. In the 36th minute Mississippi (12-3-2, 8-3-1 ASC) was able to beat Steinbach as Roni Salens headed a cross into the back of the net to give MC a 1-0 advantage.
The Tornados did a much better job of controlling the possession in the second period, outshooting the Choctaws four to one. Freshman
Axita Patel continued her knack for scoring goals in big games, as the midfielder scored an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute to tie the game at one. For Patel it was the 20th point of the season, and the third time she has scored a goal against a top six team in the ASC.
The match grew into a stalemate until Mississippi's Christy Wyne bounced a shot off the post in the 82nd minute to narrowly miss a potential game-winner. Both teams fired a shot in the second overtime period only to see the game end in a 1-1 draw.
Overall the Tornados recorded seven shots (two on goal) while Mississippi collected 11 shots (seven on goal). Leading the way for Concordia was
Axita Patel, who registered four shots in the match.
The tie guarantees at least a seventh place finish for the Tornados, but means Concordia must at least tie Louisiana College on Saturday to have a chance to finish in sixth place, and advance to the conference tournament. Here is the way the standings look currently.
- If CTX beats Louisiana, guarantees at least a 6th place finish and if Howard Payne splits (SU, TLU) the Tornados will tie HPU for fifth place.
- If CTX ties Louisiana, guarantees a 7th place finish and will need East Texas Baptist to spilt (MCM, HSU) to finish in sixth place.
- If CTX loses to Louisiana, East Texas Baptist will have to beat McMurry and tie Hardin-Simmons to move past the Tornados for sixth place.
Concordia controlls its post-season destiny tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. when Corey Holton's squad takes on Louisiana College (0-16-1, 0-10-1) at Wildcat Field.
