PINEVILLE, Louisiana --- The Concordia University Texas women's soccer program officially established itself as one of the premier programs in the ASC Saturday, collecting its first ever American Southwest Conference Tournament appearance after defeating Louisiana College 7-0 at Championship Field. The Tornados have now doubled their school record mark for wins in a season (five), set in 2009.
Concordia was officially announced as the number six seed in the American Southwest Conference Tournament being held November 5-7 at Hardin-Simmons University. The Tornados (10-6-2, 7-4-2 ASC) will take on Texas-Dallas (12-5-1, 10-2-1 ASC) at 2:00 p.m. The winner will go on to face Texas-Tyler on Saturday.
"I am very proud of the team this year. We have accomplished what we set out to do and we are excited about what is to come," commented head coach Corey Holton after the announcement was made Sunday.
CTX made another big statement to the rest of the conference Saturday in a match that saw Concordia outshoot Louisiana College 38 to one. 13 of the 17 players that saw time for the Tornados recorded shots in the match.
Striking first for the Tornados was
Chastity Carrillo, who notched her 24th point and 11th goal of the season.
Amanda Tarpley then recorded three goals in a 32 minute timespan to give CTX a 4-0 lead at the 60 minute mark. For Tarpley it was the second time this year the sophomore has scored at least two goals in a match.
CTX attempted a staggering 23 shots in the first-half as LC goalkeeper Emily Breaux made 14 saves in the period.
In the final stretches of the game
Lauriel Bonilla would have a hand in all three Concordia goals, as the freshman first scored a goal in the 70th minute. Bonilla would then dish out an assist to
Rose Cutrer to make it 6-0 CTX.
Kallie Lahey capped off the 7-0 victory when she found the back of the net in the 89th minute. For Bonilla and Lahey, it was the first collegiate goals of their young career.
Tyler Steinbach and
Olivia Jablinski combined to make one save in Concordia's eighth shutout of the season. Julie McKay collected Louisiana's (0-17-1, 0-9-0 ASC) only shot on the afternoon.
