GEORGETOWN, Texas --- The Concordia University Texas volleyball team wrapped up its 2010 season Saturday by going 2-2 at the Southwestern Halloween Tournament. CTX played four non-conference matches against Division III competition during the two-day event. The Tornados notched victories against St. Thomas and Huston-Tillotson while falling to Lycoming and Eastern University.
Concordia finishes the year with a mark of (12-15, 8-10 ASC), good for fifth place in the American Southwest Conference West Division.
The Tornados evened up its season series versus St. Thomas University (17-12) in game one of the tournament, by squeaking out a win over the Celts by scores of 25-15, 15-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-7.
Alison Pringle led CTX with 11 kills while
Amanda Affolter and
Kevyn Jackson both chipped in eight.
Sammy Ladewig dished out 19 assists in leading the team to a .220 hitting percentage.
Later Friday evening Concordia would face off against Lycoming College (15-17). Luck would not be on the side of the Tornados in this match as April Birdsong's squad dropped the five-game match by the scores of 16-25, 25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 15-17.
Grace Baumann filled in nicely at libero collecting 27 digs with junior
Kevyn Jackson contributing a game-high 13 kills to go along with 19 digs.
On Saturday the Tornados picked up an easy win four-set victory against Huston-Tillotson in the 10:00 a.m. game. CTX hit .172 in the match and won by the scores of 25-19, 25-15, 21-25, 28-26. 17 different Tornados saw action on the court, as the team recorded 18 ace serves in the match. Concordia ended the regular season atop the conference in service aces per game (1.83).
Emily Urquidi and
Suzy Parker both slammed home 8 kills in the win.
In the last game of the tournament CTX lined up against # 5 ranked Eastern University (26-4, 8-0). The Eagles came into the match with its only four losses coming against top ten nationally ranked teams. CTX would fall quietly in three sets by scores of 17-25, 16-25, 15-25.
Jessie Elaban recorded five kills in the last collegiate match of her career while
Kalynn White added seven to her team-high total.
Statistically Concordia made small improvements in both sides of the game, as the Tornados improved from its (8-19, 6-12 ASC) from a year ago. Most notably the team limited its opponents to hitting at a .138 clip as compared to the .185 percentage mark during the 2009 season. The presence of freshmen
Emma Clifford and
Alison Pringle at middle blocker being a very big part of this.
Offensively the Tornados were near the same, .116 as compared to .111 last year.
Kalynn White led the team with 227 kills on the year while setter Sammy Ladewig came on during the middle of the season to lead the team with 379 assists. Freshman
Jessie Mundfrom was one of Concordia's most consistent performers this year, earning ASC Defensive Player of the Week twice while finishing fifth in the conference with a 5.14 digs per game average.
