BOX SCORE
Austin, Texas - Jacob Stern made nine saves between the posts, but it wasn't enough, as the Concordia University Texas men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to 12th-ranked Texas-Tyler. The Tornados were blanked on the scoreboard for just the first time this season.
Texas-Tyler (10-2-0, ASC 7-1-0), which advanced to NCAAs last season after winning the league's tournament crown, applied pressure early by attempting six shots and taking two corner kicks in the opening 15 minutes. In the 20th minute, Chris Powell took a throw in at the top of the box from Jake Urbaniak and fired a shot to the back of the net to put the Patriots on the board. Concordia's
Christian Fredrickson and
Sebastian Parra each took a shot on goal in an attempt to tie the match before halftime, but goalkeeper Sergio Gardea smothered each one.
The Patriots doubled their lead with an insurance goal in the 80th minute after continuing to send a barrage of shots at Stern. Powell added his second tally of the match by beating several Tornado defenders on his own after receiving a pass from Victor Almendariz, who was credited with an assist on the play. Concordia got a few more shots off against Gardea, but the offense came up empty for just the first time this season
Concordia's Stern turned away nine of the 29 shots he faced in the losing effort. Texas-Tyler's Gardea recorded three saves to earn the shutout victory.
Concordia (5-5-1, ASC 5-3-1) will face Centenary in non-conference play on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The match will be played at Vandegrift High School's Monroe Stadium.
