BOX SCORE
INTERVIEW WITH OLIVIA JABLINSKI
INTERVIEW WITH HEAD COACH COREY HOLTON
Austin, Texas -
Kendall Williams scored her eighth goal of the season in the second half and
Olivia Jablinski made a career-high nine saves, including one from point-blank range in the waning minutes, in leading the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team to a 1-0 triumph over Texas-Tyler on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at St. Stephen's. The Tornados moved into a tie for third place with the Patriots and own a head-to-head tiebreaker with four conference matches left in the regular season.
Concordia (9-4, ASC 7-2), which matched last year's school record for conference wins, held a 14-5 shot advantage in the first half and had its chances to take the lead beginning with a missed by
Amanda Tarpley off a free kick. Working from the left side of the box in the 15th minute,
Axita Patel slipped a pass to Williams for an open look at the net. Patriot goalkeeper Paige Harris, however, came out and made a diving stop on the shot that was unleashed by Williams to keep the match scoreless. Moments later, Jablinski denied a shot that was taken by a charging Kristen Steele from the left side on the other end to keep the match in a scoreless deadlock heading into the break.
The Tornados continued to apply pressure from the opening whistle in the second half by attempting four straight shots, including two that were saved by Harris. In the 73rd minute, the hosts finally put one in the back of the net when Williams took a long through ball down the left side from Patel and was able to fire the ball past an out-of-position Harris to make it 1-0. It was the first goal scored against the Patriots in 567:46.
Texas-Tyler (8-5, ASC 7-2), however, did not give up and had its opportunities to knot the score all the way through the end of regulation. Just over a minute after the goal was scored, Kayley Coggin let the ball fly and sent it to what appeared to be the upper 90 of the goal. But Jablinski punched it over in the nick of time, forcing a corner kick that was cleared away by the Tornado defense.
In the waning moments, the Patriots had arguably their best chance of the match to get on the board as Lindsey Edwards came in all alone on Jablinski from the left side. Jablinski, however, made a diving save from point-blank range to rob Edwards of a goal. With the ball still loose and trickling towards the goal, defender
Lauren Browning made a diving stop just a few feet in front of the goal mouth to keep the match scoreless before the ball was smothered by players from both teams. The Tornados got a free kick out of the play and cleared the ball away before the final whistle sounded shortly afterwards.
Concordia's Jablinski turned away nine of the 14 shots she faced to match a school record with her sixth career shutout win. The goalkeeper, along with defenders
Elizabeth Evangelista,
Hilary Wagner,
Dalaine Whitlock and Browning played the entire 90 minutes to extend the school-record shutout streak to 610:40. Harris suffered the loss despite registering 12 saves for Texas-Tyler, which had its streak of five straight shutout victories snapped.
Concordia will face Centenary College in a non-conference battle on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m. The match will be played at Vandegrift High School's Monroe Stadium.
