Abilene, Texas – After recording its first-ever postseason victory in school history in a 2-0 decision against East Texas Baptist, the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team will continue its run for its first American Southwest Conference crown when it faces Texas-Dallas in a semifinal match on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Hardin-Simmons. A berth in Sunday's championship match against the winner of the other semifinal between Hardin-Simmons and Howard Payne will be on the line.
Concordia (14-5, ASC 10-3), which had never won a match against the Tigers before this year, beat them for the second time in 2011 yesterday by getting two goals from freshman
Kendall Williams that were set up by senior
Kiera Ruck.
Olivia Jablinski added five saves to record her eighth clean sheet and 14th win, which are both single season and career program standards
The Tornados have relied on their youthful talent up front and their veterans in the back to find success. Thirty-six of the 42 goals have been scored by underclassmen and 25 have been tallied by freshman. Williams has established single-season school records for goals (14) and points (26) and has scored multiple times in the last two matches and at least once over the past four. Classmate
Lena New and sophomore
Axita Patel have 17 points apiece, while
Chastity Carrillo, a sophomore leads the squad with seven assists. The back line consisting of seniors
Lauren Browning and
Hilary Wagner, junior
Dalaine Whitlock, freshman
Elizabeth Evangelista and
Taylor Pressley helped the team secure its school-record 11th shutout of the year yesterday. Jablinski ranks second in the league in shutouts (8) and save percentage (.861) as well as third in goals against average (0.60).
Texas-Dallas (15-3, ASC 12-1) is ranked sixth in the West Region by the NCAA and will be making its 10th consecutive appearance in the semifinal round. The Comets enter the semifinal match with the top-ranked defense in the ASC, yielding just 0.28 goals per game, and the league's second-leading scorer on its roster. Goalkeeper Brittany Best leads the conference with an 0.20 goals against average to go along with a .906 save percentage, while Emily Hughes anchors the back line in front of her which has blanked 14 opponents. Leah Bowyer has 18 goals and 10 assists for 46 points to pace an offense which has also gotten strong contributions from Katie Makanani and Carli Beckett. Both players have found the back of the net five times.
Notes: Texas-Dallas and Concordia met in the 2010 ASC Tournament's quarterfinal round with the Comets advancing on penalty kick's following 110 minutes of scoreless soccer … The Comets won this year's meeting between the schools in Richardson by a 1-0 decision with defender Emily Hughes' 25-yard strike proving to be the difference … Concordia has never beaten Texas-Dallas and is 0-13-1 all-time against the Comets.
