Abilene, Texas –
Kila Hartom made seven saves, but the Concordia University Texas women's soccer team was dealt a 2-0 loss to Texas-Dallas in the quarterfinal round of the American Southwest Conference Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 1 at the HSU Soccer Complex. The Comets scored two second-half goals to advance to tomorrow's semifinal round.
Concordia had a 6-4 shot advantage over a scoreless first half and almost scored early in the second on a
Jordan James header that barely missed the goal. Texas-Dallas, however, was able to get on the scoreboard first by capitalizing on a corner kick. Jasmine Chipps headed home the goal through a scrum of players from both teams with assists being credited to Krysta Howard and Taylor Maeker, ending a scoring drought between the two teams that went 224:04 dating back to last season.
Concordia did not give up and nearly got on the scoreboard when James took a pass from
Chastity Carrillo and started charging for the goal. But James' shot towards the far post under pressure sailed just wide of the net. After dodging a bullet, the Comets later got an insurance tally from Emily Hokenson to move on to tomorrow's semifinal round against host Hardin-Simmons.
Olivia Jablinski got the start and made one save for Concordia before being relieved by
Kila Hartom midway through the first half. Hartom turned away seven shots the rest of the way. Texas-Dallas' Brittany Best stopped one shot in the first half before Macaire Ament, who was credited with the victory, also made one save during the second frame.
Concordia (9-6-3), which concluded its third consecutive winning season, is slated to return 19 letterwinners and nine regular starters next year.
Notes: Concordia was making its third straight appearance in the American Southwest Conference Tournament after never winning more than five matches in a single season through 2009 … The Comets have eliminated the Tornados from the tournament all three times, which included today's 1-0 decision, last year's 2-0 score and by winning a shootout in 2010 …
Dalaine Whitlock tied
Lauren Browning for first on the program's all-time list for matches played (74) and never missed a start in her career … Whitlock, along with classmates
Olivia Jablinski and
Amanda Tarpley, ended their careers as the winningest class in school history … Concordia has won 33 over the last three years and 38 during the last four … Jablinski ended her three-year career with school records for best career goals against average, best save percentage, shutouts and wins.
