Austin, Texas –
Nick Haynes led five Tornados in double figures with 22 points, but the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team fell to Hardin-Simmons by a 92-88 decision on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the CTX Field House. The Tornados ended the weekend in a tie for third place in the American Southwest Conference West Division standings with McMurry.
Concordia went ahead 3-2 on a 3-pointer by
Nick Haynes and never fell behind for the rest of the first half. Hardin-Simmons tied the game at nine, 11, 14 and 16 and 18, but the Tornados were able to hold off any comeback effort by the Cowboys throughout the frame. A tip-in by Erick Jefferson made it 40-34 at the break.
Haynes started the scoring in the second half with a trey and extended the lead to twin figures at 50-40 by sinking three free throws. Hardin-Simmons brought it down to three at the 14:54 mark, but the Tornados answered with six straight to bring the deficit back up to 10. The Tornado advantage went up to 12 on a
Darius Anderson layup.
Hardin-Simmons, however, got hot as Matt Addison scored four straight to spark an 11-0 run, which was capped by John Derr's 3-pointer. After an Anderson jumper which allowed Concordia to regain the lead at 71-70 with 6:28 left, Derrick Jefferson answered with a fastbreak layup to give the visitors the lead for good. By getting four free throws at the 3:23 mark from Addison and Andy Spears and a dunk by Derrick Jefferson, the Cowboys went ahead by an 82-72 score and got all the insurance they needed to come away with the four-point victory.
Haynes scored most of his 22 points by making four 3-pointers to pace Concordia, which honored its four seniors prior to the game.
Josh Johnson recorded his fourth career double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, while Anderson and
Brett DeMetrotion netted 17 and 12 respectively.
Concordia will look to lock up a playoff spot for the sixth straight season when it visits Texas Lutheran on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Schreiner on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m.
