GAME TWO BOX SCORE
Tyler, Texas –
Brent Schaekel extended his hitting streak to 19 games and recorded two runs batted in to lead the Concordia University Texas baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of 23rd-ranked Texas-Tyler on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Irwin Field. The Tornado pitching staff, which now has a 2.44 team earned run average, kept the Patriots off the scoreboard for 13 straight innings to end the weekend.
The offenses took over in the beginning of the opener.
Collin Janssen hit an RBI single to start the scoring in the top of the first, but the Patriots answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a solo home run by Aaron McCain and an RBI single by Josh Bates.
Concordia (11-3), however, answered back and got the insurance it needed to pull out the win by scoring three times in the second and once in the third to go ahead 5-2.
Kyle Rodriguez and Janssen provided the big hits with a two-run double and solo homer, respectively. The teams each added another run to produce the final outcome.
Austin Rupert picked up his first victory of the season for Concordia by hurling 2.1 innings of relief. He yielded four hits and did not surrender a run.
Ryan Ullmann earned the save after striking out four of the five batters he faced over 1.1 frames. Chase Willard suffered the loss for Texas-Tyler after giving up seven hits and five runs, which were all earned, over three innings.
Concordia scored at least once in each of the first three innings of the nightcap to quickly go ahead by a 5-0 score. Five different players – Janssen, Schaekel,
Matt McManemin,
Alec Carter and
Colton Gommert - drove in a run during the stretch. While three hurlers were combining for a shutout, the Tornado offense scored three more times in the sixth for insurance.
Concordia's
Scott Weinschenk, the reigning American Southwest Conference Pitcher of the Week, recorded another victory by throwing four scoreless frames to close out the game. He gave up three hits, struck out four and walked only two.
Colin Butschek and
Jacob Spelbring also combined for the shutout on the mound. Brian Shore took the loss for Texas-Tyler (8-3) after getting lit up for six hits and four runs, which were all earned, in two innings of work.
Concordia, which has lost two of its three games to nationally-ranked foes while playing a competitive schedule in the early going, will visit Texas-Dallas on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.
