Ryan Ullmann threw two innings of scoreless relief in leading the Concordia University Texas baseball team to a 10-8 victory over Texas-Dallas on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at to seal the 10-8 victory for the Tornados against UT-Dallas.
UT-Dallas (5-7) jumped out to an early lead by pushing a run across in the bottom of the first inning off Concordia starter
Steven Peterson. The Tornados would answer the next half inning with three runs of their own. In that inning,
Brent Schaekel had a two-RBI single down the left field line that extended his hitting streak to 20 games.
The Comets came right back and tied the score at three by way of a two-run homer by catcher Micah Easterling. The Tornados regained the advantage in the top of the fourth inning after
Matt McManemin tripled to right center and came in on a wild pitch from the Comet hurler.
Tyler Grygar would lead off the fifth with a walk and then swipe second base.
Alec Carter would then drive Grygar home with a double to centerfield. A throwing error by the UT-Dallas first baseman on a Colin Janssen bunt plated Carter and allowed Janssen to advance to second base.
The Tornados extended their lead to 9-3 in the sixth inning by way of five hits and 3 runs. The home team would tally one of its own in the bottom half of the sixth to pull a little closer. After holding the Tornados scoreless in the top of the seventh inning, the Comets chased home four runs to pull within one of the visitors from Concordia.
Ullmann would then take the mound in the bottom of the eighth with a 10-8 lead after the Tornados tacked on an insurance run in the top of the frame. The junior right-hander clinched the win for Concordia by allowing no hits, no runs and striking out 2 over the final two innings.
Jacob Spelbring (3-0) earned the win after tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless ball in relief. T.J. Barnes (0-1) was credited with the loss for the Comets. Ullmann notched his fifth save and maintained his perfect 0.00 ERA of the season.
Concordia (12-3), which is ranked 23rd nationaly, will be back in action March 2-3 with a three-game set with LeTourneau at Tornado Field.
