Austin, Texas –
Matt McManemin went a combined 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI in the Concordia University Texas baseball team's doubleheader sweep of Southwestern University on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Tornado Field. The Tornados finished a three-game series against Southwestern with an unblemished record for the second time in three seasons.
In game one, Concordia (3-0) put a six-spot on the board after
Kyle Rodriguez led off the third inning with a triple.
Nick Kozole followed with a hit-by-pitch, and after a McManemin sacrifice bunt moved Kozole up to second base,
Brent Schaekel drove both runners home with a single to right field. Schaekel would also steal second base before
Colton Gommert would drive him home with the third run of the inning. Gommert advanced to second base on a wild pitch and then to third on a missed tag play by the Pirate third baseman that also allowed
Kyle Bieschke to reach base safely to keep the inning going.
Another Pirates wild pitch would allow the Tornado base runners to advance 90 feet. Two batters later,
Andrew Burns would walk to set up
Cody Nevilles' three-run double to left field to make the score 6-0 in favor of the Tornados.
Southwestern (0-4) would attempt to rally in the top of the fourth by scoring four runs of its own, but it was not enough, as Concordia would plate two more runs in the fourth and the sixth innings to win the game by a final score of 8-4.
Tornado starter
Tyler Grygar was credited with the victory, going four innings and striking out three Pirate hitters. Colton Mikulencak would be dealt the loss for the Pirates, which was his first of the year.
Ryan Ullmann would pick up the save for the Tornados.
In game two, the Pirates would jump out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the top of the first off Tornado starter
Colin Butschek. The visitors would meanwhile hold the Tornados scoreless until the fourth inning when the hosts would break through to take control of the game.
Grygar would start the fourth frame off with an infield single and then advance two bases after an errant pick-off throw by the Pirate pitcher got past the first baseman. Bieschke would drive Grygar in with an infield single of his own to second base.
Collin Janssen followed with a single to left center and advanced to second on a Kozole sacrifice bunt that allowed Bieschke to move over to third base. Nevilles would then drive both runners home with a triple to right center.
Gommert kept the inning alive by doubling down the right field line, scoring Nevilles, and then came around to score on McManimen's double down the left field line. Schaekel, the next batter, would drive home McManimen with a single and advance to second base on the throw. A Grygar single would allow Schaekel to move to third base.
Schaekel would cap the seven run fourth inning with a steal of home as part of a double steal that saw both runners safely find a home on one of the bases with Schaekel at the dish and Grygar back on first base.
The Tornados, who had been down 3-0 at one point, took that 7-3 lead into the fifth inning and would never look back by adding two more runs in the fifth, five in the sixth and one more in the seventh to complete the 15-3 victory.
Steven Peterson would notch his first win of the season with three innings of scoreless and hitless relief. Matt Stuart suffered his second defeat of the season for the Pirates, yielding seven earnded runs in 3.2 frames.
The Tornados will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 10 with a 4 p.m. game versus Howard Payne and a 7 p.m. game versus Louisiana College at Tornado Field as part of a tournament hosted by Concordia University Texas.
