Collin Janssen's ninth inning single gave the Concordia University Texas baseball team a 6-5 victory in game two of a doubleheader over Howard Payne Sunday, March 11.  The Tornados won the first game 8-2.
 
In the nightcap, Howard Payne (5-10, ASC 0-2) got the scoring started in the top half of the second with two runs.  The Tornados (16-4, ASC 2-0) got one back later that inning on an RBI groundout by Colton Gommert that plated Janssen. 
 
Kyle Rodriguez led off the third inning with a single up the middle and would advance to third on a double by Brent SchaekelQuinn Guest followed with a sacrifice fly to center that would bring in Rodriguez to tie the game at two.
 
The Yellow Jackets chased home three more runs in the top of the fifth, but the Tornados answered with three of their own in the bottom of that inning to again pull even.  Janssen worked a two-out walk followed by a free pass to Nick KozoleKyle Bieschke reached base by way of a hit-by-pitch to load the bases.  Gommert then laced a double to right-center, clearing the bases. 
 
The two teams would stay tied at five until the ninth inning.  Guest worked a one-out walk and moved to third on a single through the right side by pinch hitter Andrew Burns.  With runners on the corners, Janssen would hammer a two-strike pitch over the centerfielder's head to score Guest and send the home crowd home happy.
 
Russell Johns (1-0) would tally the victory in the nightcap for CTX.  Howard Payne's Carlton Brown suffered the loss.  Gommert had four RBI in the game to pace the offense for the Tornados.
 
In the early game, Howard Payne jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but the Tornados would erase the deficit the next inning and take a lead they would not relinquish.  In the third frame, Cody Nevilles walked to start the inning.  Matt McManemin followed by being hit by his seventh pitch of the season, and  Tyler Grygar walked two batters later to load the bases.  Rodriguez then drove in Nevilles with a fielder's choice.  McManemin touched home thanks to a sacrifice fly by Janssen that the Howard Payne centerfielder dropped allowing all runners to reach safely.  Burns would follow by knocking in Grygar with a fielder's choice groundout.
 
The inning would continue with a Kyle Bieschke walk to re-load the bases followed by a Gommert single that brought in Rodriguez.  Nevilles followed with two RBI of his own on a base hit up the middle, scoring Bieschke and Burns to make the score 6-1 Tornados.
 
The Yellow Jackets scored a run in the fourth, but that would be all for them in game one.  The Tornados added two more insurance runs in the fifth.
 
Austin Rupert (2-1) notched the victory for Concordia with 3.1 innings of two-hit baseball.  Howard Payne starter Gilbert Barrera (0-3) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
 
Concordia and Howard Payne meet for the finale of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
