GAME ONE BOX SCORE

GAME TWO BOXSCORE

Austin, Texas
Tyler Grygar pitched eight and a third innings and allowed only two runs on five hits while striking out eight in game one of Saturday's doubleheader versus Hardin-Simmons, but the Concordia University Texas baseball team would fall to the Cowboys, 2-1, at Tornado Field.  HSU would complete the sweep of the Tornados in game two by a score of 5-4.

In the early game, the two teams exchange scoreless frames through the first three innings before Concordia (18-5, ASC 4-2) would break through with a run in the fourth.  Nick Kozole led off the inning with a single through the left side, which was the first hit of the game for either team.  Matt McManemin drove a one out base hit to left field, allowing Kozole to advance to second base.  Brent Schaekel followed by lacing a pitch into centerfield for an RBI single.

The lead would not last long for Concordia, however, as Hardin-Simmons (9-9, ASC 3-3) would answer in the top of the fifth by using two hits to knot the game at one.  The score would remain tied into extra innings until Hardin-Simmons first baseman Troy Tarrant hammered a home run over the wall in left field.  Quinn Guest would give hope to the Tornados in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out triple, but he would be stranded there to end the game.

Grygar (2-2) would be the tough-luck loser for CTX.  Tyler Brunnemann (2-0) earned the victory for Hardin-Simmons with two and a third innings of one-hit relief.

In the nightcap, Hardin-Simmons got the scoring started with a run in the first.  The Tornados would immediately respond in the bottom of the frame, scoring three to take the lead.  Guest lined a single to right field and moved to second on Kyle Rodriguez's walk and then to third on a free pass to Collin JanssenAndrew Burns would stroke a deep fly out to centerfield scoring Guest.  Rodriguez and Janssen would also tag up and advance on the sacrifice fly by Burns.  Colton Gommert followed with a two-RBI knock into right field.

The Cowboys came back and tied the game in the third inning, using two hits and two base-on-balls. Hardin-Simmons took a 4-3 lead in the fifth and added an insurance run in the seventh.  Concordia would add a run in their half of the seventh, but it would not be enough as the Cowboys held on for the 5-4 victory.

James Simmons (1-1) was the winning pitcher for HSU while game one winning pitcher Brunnemann returned in game two to pick up his third save on the season.  Sean Thompson (0-1) took the loss for Concordia.

Concordia returns to action March 23-24 when it travels to Alpine to battle Sul Ross State.  Game one is scheduled for a 7 p.m. first pitch Friday night and will be followed by a doubleheader Saturday.
